She was a remarkable person

Clara Barton dedicated her life and energies to help others in times of need - both home and abroad, in peacetime as well as during military emergencies. Glen Echo was her home the last [15] years of her life and the structure illustrates her dedication and concern for those less fortunate than herself.

Visit Clara Barton National Historic Site

Clara Barton National Historic Site commemorates the life of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The home served as the headquarters and warehouse for the organization. From this house, Miss Barton organized American Red Cross relief efforts for victims of natural disasters and war.

Take a tour

The house is shown by guided tour only. Tours start on the hour between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. There is no admission charge. The site is open daily but closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day and is administered under the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Climate

Glen Echo, Maryland is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Summers are usually humid and hot. Winters are usually above freezing but cold. Snowfalls do occur, but are usually not deep. Spring and fall brings beautiful sunny days as well as wind and rain. Clara Barton National Historic Site is not air-conditioned nor well heated. The house has a front porch, but there is no other weather shelter while waiting for tours.
